Private tour of Cabrillo lighthouse by Captain Jonathan Spaner
May 29, 2015
Captain Jonathan Spaner, Commanding Officer of the US Coast Guard Sector San Diego, is hosting us at the residences (where they filmed scenes from the movie "Top Gun") and lighthouse. We will learn about the history of the property and then we will walk us to the lighthouse and cliff area for a spectacular ocean view off limits to the general public (photo opportunity, bring your camera). We will eat our box lunches outdoors in a covered area, so bring a hat and coat. You do not need to pay to enter at the park, just tell the Park Ranger that you are a Point Loma Rotary member and are visiting Captain Spaner. Park in the driveway by the tide pools, there will be people to help, but you will not be able to leave early as they will be stacking up the cars.

Ride the Hidden, Unridden, and Forbidden Point Loma in the 3rd annual Jim Krause Memorial Charity Bicycle Ride. The ride will start and end at Liberty Station and traverse exclusive scenic bike paths and routes around beautiful San Diego. Ride the Point has three distances to accommodate different levels of bicycling experience: the 10 mile is a relatively flat course mostly on bike paths in Liberty Station, Spanish Landing, and Harbor Island along beautiful San Diego Bay and is perfect for cruisers, beginning riders, challenged athletes, and families; the 25 and 62 mile Metric Century are on-street rides with exclusive routes and challenging climbs around the Cabrillo National Monument, Sunset Cliffs, Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, Mission Valley, Mission Gorge, and the USD campus. The ride will also include “King of the Mountain” and “Queen of the Mountain” time trials from the Point Loma tide pools. The public is invited to the free after-ride healthy lifestyle expo in the North Promenade at Liberty Station from 9 am until 2 pm. There will be local vendors, live music from the Paul Hartley Band, and after-ride refreshments at Stone Brewery. Come cheer on the riders as they return, and enjoy a day of Point Loma community spirit. For more information on Ride the Point, visit www.RideThePoint.org or follow us on Facebook. |
